Cat Crisis Briefing for Mamdani Transition Team

Before Mayor Zohran Mamdani was sworn in on January 1, we presented his transition team with a briefing document outlining the cat crisis in NYC and potential solutions. Our goal is to begin a fruitful dialog with the new mayoral administration to effect meaningful change that will address the root causes of a city-wide animal abandonment that is burdening animal rescue volunteers in all five boroughs. Mamdani’s campaign centered on affordability which is also a primary contributor to the cat crisis and companion animal crisis in NYC.

The solutions we proposed include:

  • launching a comprehensive, affordable (if not free) spay-neuter program for all New Yorkers

  • creating a Department of Animal Welfare

  • funding Animal Welfare Officers and community support services

  • ensuring that Animal Care Centers receive adequate, baseline funding to become strong, effective community resources
